Hypertext and Patchwork Girl

Hypertext may seem like a foreign concept upon first glance. However, once immersed in the material, it becomes obvious that it's not so different from what we're already familiar with. Previous experiences, such as reading a book, guide the reader to figure out how to read the hypertext. Erzinghaus compares it to being in an unfamiliar town. There is the impulse to explore the routes and paths that take you to interesting places or simply to get your bearings. No longer in a comfort zone, it's imperative to navigate from point A to point B. The ways to get from point A to point B in a new town are numerous including walking, biking, or some public transportation. In hypertext, it's clicking. Point A and point B are lexias which are comparable to a paragraph or page in a book. Clicking on a word or phrase will lead to a new lexia that has yet to be discovered and that new lexia will also include other words and phrases that continue the path or lead back to the beginning which is known as recurrence and it is "the main way that people perceive a hypertext, the way they learn what contours they may follow and how those contours may change as the document evolves" (Recurrence is not a Vice). It shows how each lexia is connected not just physically but thematically. Seemingly unrelated ideas are sewn together in a patchwork of different ideas that form a story.









Paying attention is essential or else there is the risk of getting lost. Similar to a town, there are standard markers that dictate where to go and what to do like a stop sign. Knowledge of other towns and previous experiences help to know that at a stop sign, stop. This applies to hypertext because the frames of references that lend to figuring it out are experiences of reading things like paragraphs. That's one way of thinking about hypertext; another way "focuses on […] its essential qualities: 'where should the story begin? How will it end? These are two of the primary questions an author must answer when creating any fiction. Hypertext foregrounds such questions of boundaries; in this non-linear environment, the author has the freedom to discard old structural conventions and traditional ideas of closure'" (Carazo & Jimenez, 116) This is another great thing about hypertext: there may be a place to start and a place to end but it can change depending on which lexia the reader is led to. This happens quite often in Shelley Jackson's Patchwork Girl. Within this story, Jackson "combines the literal and the metaphorical in her reenactment of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, both as an act of bringing back to life and an act of remembering" (Carazo & Jimenez, 116). This hypertext is a difficult concept because it is hard to tell where in space you are, whereas in a book it's all linear, it's constant, and you can reference a paragraph on a certain page and you know where on the page it appears (and Shelley even discusses this idea within Patchwork Girl [this writing, Patchwork Girl]). However difficult it is to grasp, it still has a great theme and some powerful messages.




Jackson's Patchwork Girl is an extremely well-written hypertext that is, in theory, a rewrite of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with a new perspective and new ideas. There are so many great ideas put forth that it's hard to figure out where to begin talking about them (just like hypertexts!) Before I get deep into the themes and messages, I'll first begin by describing the plot of Patchwork Girl. The character Mary Shelley creates a creature similar to the way Victor Frankenstein creates his creature: she gathers body parts from the deceased and sews them all together into one woman, Patchwork Girl. She has the memories of all the people who have contributed to her so she's very awkward in her movements. She talks about how part of her arm was from a strong woman and the other part was from a delicate and graceful woman so they don't agree with each other (right arm, Patchwork Girl).




While Frankenstein fears his creature, runs from it, and denies it the only thing he ever asked for, Shelley feels compassion for Patchwork Girl and feels as though she owes her, as her creator, guidance and friendship (she stood & infant, Patchwork Girl).









Both Shelley and Patchwork Girl have certain longings. Shelley has a strange desire to be a part of Patchwork Girl in the way that all the others are a part of her. She craves to be with her at all times and thinks about cutting a piece of herself off to sew onto Patchwork Girl so that they may always be together and so that Shelley may live vicariously through Patchwork Girl because she knows that she gets to experience things that Shelley never has and never will. Eventually, Patchwork Girl begins to grow restless within the confines of Shelley's home and she longs to go off to America to experience new things. Contrary to the way Frankenstein destroyed his creature's dream of having a partner like him, Shelley lets Patchwork Girl have her wish of traveling to America even though she does not fully want her to go (treachery and mary, Patchwork Girl).




Before she left, Shelley got her wish and cut off a piece of her leg and sewed it onto Patchwork Girl (crave and female trouble, Patchwork Girl). In her travels to America, Patchwork Girl meets people who she eventually learns are very similar to her. She befriends Chancy who appears to be a man but it is later revealed that he is a woman. She also meets a man who came from a circus claiming to have a tail. He didn't really but when she asks him about it he tells her how he would love to be different and if he really could have a tail that he would do it. She realizes that she's not the only one who is different because she is "manmade" and not born (Manmade, Patchwork Girl).


After she's been living in America for awhile, she begins to fall apart. She tries to keep herself together but she is not able to succeed. The story sort of ends around there but it doesn't really have a finale or any real closure. Then it just goes right back to the beginning, similar to a patchwork quilt where there's no true beginning or end.

The way this story is presented as a hypertext is the best way for it to be told and the only way that it would truly work thematically and for creating a message. Shelley's most obvious theme is the creation of a patchwork in all manners of speaking. First, there is the suggestion that there are many different creators of Patchwork Girl. There is Shelley Jackson who is the actually creator of the piece of fiction. There is Mary Shelley who creates Patchwork Girl in the story and she also created the novel Frankenstein, off of which this hypertext is based. Victor Frankenstein created the creature that Patchwork Girl resembles and there are allusions to his creation and how he felt towards his creation with the hypertext. Patchwork Girl herself is a creator because her identity is completely made up of other people and she is forced to figure out who she is. She even goes as far as trying to buy someone's past to call it her own and she tries to find herself in America, separate from Mary Shelley. Also, the reader is a creator of the story because of the choices about what to click on and when which lead to different lexias and further the story. The reader also must interpret the separate parts of the story into a whole and make connections. All of these creators are like the pieces that make a quilt: they don't have any real relation as separate pieces but once they're assembled as a whole then the connections are apparent.

Another message that Jackson creates pertains to a feminist perspective. There are several lexias that have a subtle indication that women are subservient to men and not considered equals. There are small, subtle indications of this in the lexia "crave" and "female trouble" when Shelley says how she "jumps up restless from Percy's side" (Crave, Patchwork Girl). This would not appear to be weird if in "female trouble" she doesn't talk about how "Percy wonders what is wrong with her; [she] allude[s] to 'feminine complaints' and he delicately withdraws" and how she wishes to throw a tantrum but she can't show her anger and she must be confined to self-preservation or else they will think she is crazy. She also wishes that she could be like Patchwork Girl because she can live any life she wants while Shelley cannot. She is envious of her and she can only live through Patchwork Girl's experiences. Also, when she talks about wanting to cut off a piece of herself to sew onto Patchwork Girl, she has to consider a part of her that her husband won't notice and miss as if she does not have a say over anything even her own body (crave female trouble, Patchwork Girl).




Patchwork Girl comes right out and says how women are not meant to have their own lives and that the only belonging associated with them is belonging to someone, as in a father or a husband (I am, Patchwork Girl).


One last part where Jackson comments on a part in Frankenstein that seems to make men seem extremely powerful. She says in basket, "Has it not struck you as odd that the whole of a female of stature commensurate with that of her monstrous intended (not to mention a 'great quantity of stones') could be hoisted by one man and borne out to sea—in a basket?" (basket, Patchwork Girl). It is not something that I ever considered when reading Frankenstein but it is an extremely valid point to make that the women in Frankenstein are made out to be frail and weak while Victor has the ability to lift and make something airborne that weighs more than he does.



I never would have given Patchwork Girl a second glance had I not been introduced to it in this class. I've always been a firm believer in the idea that books are the best way to become more literate and I've never considered that anything else could offer the quality of a story that a book can but after reading Patchwork Girl, I'm much more open to the idea that it doesn't have to be a book to be great literature. In fact, I don't think that Patchwork Girl presented in the form of a book would have had the same effect on me or would have portrayed the same themes that it did in hypertext. Hypertext allows a web of possibilities to open up for interpretation and for reading the story that can only be achieved in this format, and to be honest I'm surprised it wasn't thought of sooner.

My Experiences with Interactive Fiction






























Interactive Fiction is the most difficult and annoying yet thought-provoking and interesting concept in literature I've ever encountered. Dennis Jerz provides the best and most basic definition of it. He says it "is computer-mediated narrative, resembling a fine-grained 'Choose Your Own Adventure' story, in which the reader helps to determine the outcome of the story" (What is IF?, Jerz). Its design is a combination of a game and a short story, featuring characteristics of each. It's similar to a game because you have to interact with the software in order to progress. There are obstacles the reader has to get past by solving puzzles to proceed. There is always a clear goal that must be achieved in order to finish. The reader becomes the character in the story just like you would if you were playing a video game and had to play through the player's perspective. It's also like a short story, though, because the descriptions are very detailed so the reader can imagine what's going on. There are settings in which the character moves and interacts. There are other non-player characters with which the reader can converse. Sometimes there's even character development, although it's usually gradual and limited. Although it's hard to wrap your mind around, the combination of these elements allow for IF to be considered literature.

Similar to the way many new forms of media began, people are often skeptical about the value or scholarship of interactive fiction. The film industry is such a wildly acclaimed part of our culture but it didn't start out that way. The first films certainly wowed people but no one thought it was actually worthwhile. Interactive fiction has the same potential to follow that same course. I think people are afraid of change and they don't think other things could be better than the ones they already use and love like mysteries, adventures, and fantasy novels. If they stopped to consider how much IF really offers then they might surprise themselves and enjoy it because it's not really all that different than those genres. Mary Ann Buckles wrote an article that explains just that. She points out that IF resembles mystery novels because both have puzzles that need to be solved and you have to pay attention for the subtle clues that will point you in the right direction. Buckles describes it as a competition with the author to figure out the ending. She compares IF to adventure novels like Treasure Island because they both require the reader to go on some sort of quest to get to the treasure, whether it be literal or not. And if anyone has read and loved the fantasy novels Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings, then they have to love IF because it creates an imaginary world with its own set of rules by which the player now has to abide. I was even a skeptic of the scholarship of IF until I read Buckles' argument and realized that interactive fiction is even better than the novels because it's like reading Harry Potter and getting to be Harry Potter. Who would pass up the opportunity to play a character from their favorite book?

IF Works:

Of all the IFs we attempted, the only one I was actually able to finish was "Whom the Telling Changed". The unique way that it was designed is the reason why I was able to finish it. It offered hints by putting certain words in bold or in capital letters so I was able to figure out what I should ask about. One thing I noticed most about this IF was that in order to progress, the verb I used most was "listen" which I thought might tie in with the theme of the IF. I think the theme was about how you can't really talk or form an opinion about something that you have no experience with because throughout the IF, the character had to listen to the storyteller and he also had to listen to his enemy in order to make a decision. Only once he made a decision did the storyteller die and he became the storyteller himself meaning that he was now the wise one who would guide the people.

What I liked best about this IF was the fact that the choices you made when solving the puzzles would influence what was going to happen. I chose to take the medicine bag so I became the healer and opposed the war that my enemy (whom I also chose to be the enemy) was proposing against the newcomers. I could have chosen the knife which would have made me the warrior and I would have supported the war. I was also able to choose who the storyteller was based on who I chose to hand the teller's circlet to. All the puzzles led to different pathways for the game to proceed and "how and when you solve these puzzles may affect how the plot unfolds and even the outcome of the game" (A Beginner's Guide, Ramsberg).


Because the clues were pretty much handed to me and I didn't have to do much thinking, it would be classified as one of the games that "don't have puzzles, but rely on the story itself being good enough to keep the player's interest" (Beginner's Guide, Step 2). And keep the player's interest it did. "Whom the Telling Changed" had a story within the story so there was not only a plot being developed in the game, there was great character development within the story as well. Another thing that made this take on the feeling of literature was that the story was based around the Epic of Gilgamesh so although the world in which the IF took place was fictional, there were pieces of real literature embedded within it. This part of the story elements helped the game elements because the characters were meant to use the story to decide what decision should be made about the potential war. Although I believe that this game should be considered more for beginning users of IF because it was very basic and elementary, I do believe it had a lot to offer in all respects of interactive fiction.

Writing IF:

Writing interactive fiction is one of the most difficult things I've attempted when it comes to creative writing. It was an interesting process because I was trying to create a piece of work that forced the user to figure out what was supposed to happen. It was like writing my own story but having to keep in mind the fact that the user is in charge of what happens. I had to learn how to be creative in the way that I dropped hints because I wanted the user to get the full effect without giving away the whole plot or without basically telling them "The door is locked. If only you had a key..." I enjoyed creating the hints and describing the rooms or the people in the room. I enjoyed the writing process itself more than I enjoyed trying to figure out how to do something in Inform7. That was the most difficult thing for me.


There were only a few problems that I ran into while writing my IF but I was frustrated by a couple things. The fact that there so many fine details that go into writing IF was irritating. There was a time when I wanted to add a thing to a room which already had other things in it and the order that I put them in mattered because I had a description for one of the things but not the others. I wanted to describe a "syllabus" but the description I wrote ended up describing a "backpack" which made no sense at all. I figured out that I would have to write a whole new paragraph just for each description just to save myself some sanity. There was another time when I wanted to add a direction for a room into a description and I kept getting an error message when I would run it which confused me because the sentence had worked before I added any new details. I thought it was because of the way I worded the sentence that confused Inform7 so for a few minutes I tried different ways to rearrange the sentence so that Inform7 would understand it and I finally realized that I had accidentally deleted a period when I added new details which caused Inform7 to completely ignore it as a sentence. I also wanted the user to be able to try out different verbs instead of just "examine", "open", or "talk to" but every time I tried to create a new verb I ran into problems and I finally just gave up.

The biggest thing that's easier to be expressed in IF rather than in a written story is the degree to which a user becomes involved in the story. When the user is required to find a way out of Rome to escape being hanged, it's much easier to get involved in the IF and interact with it. Similar to digital poetry, readers of written poetry are simply reading it and they have no need to look any deeper than the text but when reading digital poetry, there are so many additional factors that will aid the reader's interpretation and how they read the poem. When someone reads a story, the most they can get involved is by relating to a character or rooting for the character. When someone uses IF, they become the character which thus gives them more incentive to get to the ending. Writing the IF that gets the user involved though is easier said than done. Being a novice, I wanted to give the character as many options as they needed to figure out what to do but I just didn't know how to write it in IF. It was like learning a new language and trying to talk to someone who speaks it fluently and the only way your message will be conveyed is if they hear it exactly as it's supposed to be otherwise they can't respond to you. Although I felt limited by what I knew, I struggled because there were so many things that I could add to my IF to make it a better game but I just couldn't choose which ones to add. When I did choose which ones to add, I had no idea where in the source code I was supposed to write them. Given more time, I would be able to learn more rules and I could eventually create a work that would be worthy of playing.


I think if I had to choose between writing the same story as an IF or with pen and paper, I would probably choose the pen and paper. My main reason is because I wouldn't have to deal with technicalities of Inform7 and writing is much easier than learning the details of a new computer program. Also, I like that the user of IF gets to figure out the puzzles to find out what to do next but I found that I was much better at describing the situation than designing a situation. I struggled trying to set up a situation where the user would figure out what to do next. When we had people test out our IFs, I realized that the hints that I thought were very clear were not clear at all. There were several pieces of scenery, things, and dialogue that were helpful for figuring things out that the tester didn't pick up on. If they had examined the things/scenery or picked up on the things that people said then they would have revealed clues about where to go and what to do once there. I thought I did a good job at describing the situations that I managed to design though. However, it didn't really work because I think I ended up believing the tester was a mind-reader and would understand where I was taking them. I also went into great detail about certain characters which is much more prevalent in writing a story than IF. IF was more about the goal rather than the character development and I prefer the character development. If I had the opportunity to write this with pen and paper, it would be very obvious what was happening, who was there, and what the character should or should not do. I would prefer to be able to lay it all out there instead of making poor attempts to guide someone.

I thought that writing my own IF would make it easier to decide if I like it or not but it actually made me somewhat indifferent to it altogether. Being the user of IF was very frustrating because I had a hard time figuring out the puzzles especially with "All Roads." I experienced "stuckness" often and that would make me dislike IF very much just because I could never figure out what to do next. The only IF I was ok with reading was "Whom the Telling Changed" and that was only because all of the clues were highlighted so I knew what I should be asking. "Galatea" was just as difficult as "All Roads" because no matter how many times I tried, I kept irritating Galatea so she would stop talking to me and I was never able to reach an ending. Being the writer of IF was not any better of an experience. I thought I was being obvious enough so the user would figure things out but I learned through the testing that I wasn't and I also ran out of things for the user to do. My IF was about a student who did poorly on a paper so his goal is to figure out what he can do to bring his grade up and how he must do it. Once I got to the part where I wanted the user to study or to read notes, I ran into a problem of having time pass in the IF world and coming up with material for the character to be studying. It would definitely require many months of learning about Inform7 and developing situations where that would all be possible. I did not enjoy running out of ideas or being stuck so I'm not crazy about either side of IF.

My Own Attempts to Create E-Poetry









In order to critique e-poetry, it's necessary to have some working knowledge of it and to experience the creation process yourself. This way, you will get a sense of what goes into it. It's just like anything else; you can never truly understand the effort put into something until you've attempted to do it yourself. Let's just say that I now have an immense appreciation for e-poetry and a great respect for the creators. My attempt to create e-poetry was anything but successful. For an hour and a half, I struggled with what to write about, what aspects of e-poetry to include, and learning how to apply those aspects. I don't have much to show for it either.


First of all, I'm not very creative when it comes to writing poetry nor am I very knowledgeable of how to work PowerPoint. I know the basics of putting together a presentation of information for a class but I've never had experience with the special effects so my e-poem was very basic and very literal. My title page was very basic and I wanted to convey a recurring theme of simplicity so everything is in lower case. In my next slide, I only put a few words on it that describe my hometown and I tried to use special effects that exemplified those words. I wanted to show how much I love my town so in my next slide when I referred to it as "a world of treasure" I changed the font to a prettier font to emphasize those words. I struggled with the next slide because I had many different entrances for each text and image and I couldn't figure out how to get them in the right order so that took up a good amount of time. It was definitely fun applying all the special effects but it was much more difficult than I had hoped because there were so many things I had to consider like timing, delay, sequence, duration, and whether it would begin with a click or begin on its own. It was a lot to think about for someone who's not so technologically savvy.


Not much of my e-poem was restricted to a digital version. I had trouble letting go of the "writing a poem" mindset that it really resembled a written poem with pictures that just happened to be on a computer screen. I'm well aware that I'm far from an e-poet, but I was frustrated that I couldn't create the same effect and emotions that I got from the poems we've read in class. It also bothered me that I was unable to inspire much thought with my poem because everything I included was so literal that thought was completely unnecessary. The only things that I was able to make more digital were the ways that I presented the images and the texts that went along with them because the way they entered and their special effects seemed to emphasize how I felt about each description. I could easily have gotten carried away with the special effects to the point where it just wouldn't apply to the meaning of the text if I had spent more time with it. However, I feel that I would be able to create something more thought-provoking if I had hand-written because I would be able to focus more on what the poem was about than trying to figure which elements would best enhance what I was trying to say. From this experience, I give props to the e-poets who have so successfully created electronic literature.

My Encounter with E-poetry out of Class







































Once we finished going over the e-poems in class and were assigned to find some of our own, I was feeling very confident that I could find one and analyze it very well. Easier said than done. Finding an e-poem that was simple enough for a novice like me to interpret yet complex enough to show that I actually put effort into the assignment was no easy feat. I went through countless lists of e-poems that were either so involved that I wasn't sure what I was looking at or that were so simple that I wasn't sure how much I could even say about it. I wanted to enjoy reading it and also feel challenged to figure out what it could mean. Finally, I found one that I deemed suitable for my needs. I decided on "Strings" by Dan Waber (which can be found at the following URL: http://www.vispo.com/guests/DanWaber/index.html ).



In "Strings", there are different stages where the strings will transform into different words and move around the screen. In order, the stages are argument, argument2, flirt, flirt (cntd), haha, youandme, arms, and poidog. In argument, there is one string that rocks back and forth on the screen and as it goes from side to side it changes from the word "yes" to "no" until it finally falls flat again. In argument2, the word "maybe" is added and the words are randomly flying around the screen. In flirt, the word "no" floats across the screen and when it exits, it begins to transform into a new word but it is illegible. In flirt (cntd), the word "yes" just floats around, twirls, and gets larger at times. In haha, there is one string that resembles the one in argument because it rocks back and forth and as it reaches each side the word "ha" appears. Each time it rocks back and forth, more "has" appear on the string until the whole string is covered with "hahahahahahaha". The string finally goes flat. In youandme, the word "you" moves at a very slow and steady pace as the word "me" flies around aimlessly. In arms, the string transforms from the word "your" to "arms" to an open ring that twirls around to "me" before falling flat. In poidog, the string transforms from each word to form the sentence "words are like strings that I pull out of my mouth" and falls flat.

I believe that each stage of this poem represented different aspects of a relationship. In argument, the yes and no were so grounded and it was so back and forth that it reminded me of the fights in a relationship where it's impossible to sway the other's opinions. In argument2, it reminded me of the fights that aren't very substantial where neither side is very strong because the "yes" and "no" were just floating around and then "maybe" would enter the picture occasionally. In flirt, it reminded me of the beginning stages of flirting when one person is slightly reserved but then they open up to the flirting because it started out as "no" but then it progressed to an illegible word as if they were letting go of their reservations. In flirt (cntd), it seemed to resemble strong flirting because the word "yes" was the only word. It floated and twirled which reminded me of a person who was enjoying the flirting and was actively flirting back. In haha, I was reminded of the good times that are had in a relationship and how each person enjoys the other's company very much because the "ha" was going between both sides and grew to more "has" as it progressed. In youandme, the way that "you" was moving steadily along while "me" zipped all around "you" made me think of two things. I thought of relationships where the people have such completely opposite personalities but it works for them and they're ok with it. The other thing it reminded me of is how sometimes there is one person who is always putting more effort into the relationship than the other. In arms, when it changed from "your arms" to an open ring that circled around to "me", it made me think of how people feel safe, comfortable, and whole in the arms of their loved one. Finally in poidog, when it says "words are like strings that I pull out of my mouth" it made me think of when you're with someone that you're comfortable with, that you relate to really well, and that you feel a strong connection to, it's incredibly easy to talk to them and you feel like you'll never run out of things to say to each other.


This poem would be extremely confusing on a page because the way that the reader is able to interpret it has everything to do with the way the words move. There are no other elements other than the movements of the words but they make the poem what it is. If it was simply the words on a page, no one would be able to figure out the theme which is the different elements of a relationship. They might figure out that it had to do with two people but nothing else would make sense. Also, in the digital version it had titles of each element which, if presented on a page, might confuse the reader even further. I really enjoyed this poem in its electronic form because it was able to convey all the different elements of a relationship simply by moving and transforming a string. I was able to relate to each element simply because of the way it was presented and if it was on a piece of paper I wouldn't have understood it.

My Encounters with Electronic Poetry in Class

With less than a month and only four classes in, we've already been exposed to several very interesting kinds of electronic poetry. We've looked at some that have been written first then adapted into a digital version. Some required us to move our mouse over the text in a certain way to view what the text said. Others simply started on their own and all we had to do was listen and watch the progression of images and text. Some where we had to fully participate and changed the text line by line or stanza by stanza as the images changed. Although they were all very unique in their presentation and what was required of the reader, they all managed to lead us to interpretations that we may not have come up with if we were reading the poem on a piece of paper. My favorite experience required little participation of the mouse but a good amount of interpretation. It was "Faith" by Robert Kendall.

"Faith" consisted of a combination of different fonts, different colors, sounds, and special effects. The first thing you see when "Faith" begins is the word "faith" at the top of the screen and it is a very ornate font in the color of orange. The word "logic" begins to fall from above it and bounces off of "faith" then falls down and disappears. Each time they hit the word "faith" there is a little pinging sound. One of them remains on the page and forms the beginning of the sentence "logic can't bend this". These words are a light orange and the font is very simple. A button appears at the bottom of the screen that says "So…" and once clicked, the next bunch of words of the poem are added to the ones already present on the screen. They reveal the sentence "I edge logic out. Can't the mind press on around the bend to consummate this vision of the deep "or"? As these words appear, light sounds play. These words are red. Another button appears at the bottom that says "Maybe. But…" Once clicked, words rearrange to form new words and other words are added to form the sentence "I hedge. Oh red winking neon logic. No, I just can't make the sunny side of my mind press the black button, think around the bend of theory to be only this consummate "o" this visionary "r" of the deeper world." As these words appear, wistful music plays. These words are a dark red. Another button appears that says "yet then…" and the rest of the poem appears as more words are added and rearranged. The music playing is suspenseful and intense as if leading to the conclusion and the words are in black. They say "I step to the idea edge elegantly and oh so ultimately, not just any watered down walking out, but a fine wine of leave-taking, a full-bodied forgoing-going-gone upon the logic lip. No, I just can't make the usual sense anymore, so I'll simply stride out of my mind, press my foot firmly into the black, all-but-bottomless chasm beyond the brink, around the bend, off the rocker (yippee!), to leave behind only this consummate poem, this visionary, incorruptible transcript of the deeper world's One True Word: Leap". The word "leap" grows to the size of the screen and slowly disappears. The next button says "Now…" and once clicked all the words start to fall to the bottom of the screen leaving just the words "Just to sum up:" and then the word "faith" at the top falls down to the bottom and crushes all the words so that it is at the end of the sentence. As the words fall, sounds play that sound like something tumbling down.

The meaning I got out of this poem was that Faith withstands all logic. It seemed that Kendall started out confused about whether he should use logic or faith and this was represented by the colors of the words. They started out light and progressively grew darker as though his realization was becoming more concrete that all he needs is a leap of faith. The music also showed his progression from confusion to his realization because it started out light like it was just a thought and it grew more intense the deeper his thoughts became. Lastly, the way that the words fell down and all that was left was "faith" seemed to show that Kendall was acknowledging that once you find faith, nothing else matters. This poem evoked emotions that were very touching and would have been absent if it wasn't in this digital format. For this particular poem, I believe it is necessary to read it on the screen because simply reading it without the added elements doesn't give me the same reaction. Just rereading the poem that I rewrote in this blog didn't even evoke any emotion in me. The interpretations I drew from the e-poem were all based on the colors, sounds, fonts, and special effects done with the words. Those are what made me contemplate the meaning more and I don't believe that words on a page would have meant the same. The word choice even seems more powerful because of the digital elements. I would consider it a mistake for it to be presented any differently.

The Emergence of Digital Literature

When I entered this class, I was extremely skeptical that I would ever prefer digital literature to written literature. It's a topic that has bothered many people, including me, the way that technology is becoming the tool of choice for reading literature. Literature has come extremely far in the past five centuries and Katherine Hayles provides a good example of how people fear the new transformations of literature. In an excerpt from her article "Electronic Literature: What is it?" she tells a story about a monk who is caught with a printed book and the head monk fears the implications this means for the future of literature. He feared that their value as precious artifacts would be diminished if they could be produced so quickly and cheaply (A Nicholas Sparks novel is probably not a precious artifact when there are 999,999 other copies of it.) He also feared that if anyone would have access to printing then writing itself would also become compromised (Ever read National Enquirer?) He was right to fear these ideas because they have more or less proven true. Literature hasn't stopped evolving; it's made its new and improved appearance in the twentieth century as a digital force to be reckoned with. Electronic literature is everywhere. With the emergence of the new Kindle, I now wonder how long it will be before people stop reading books. Now with the emergence of electronic poems, I wonder how much time published poetry has before everyone starts using the digital version. I thought it would take a lot to convince me that digital literature has a lot to offer. However, after viewing the first few e-poems of the class, discussing the characteristics and complexity of e-poems, and attempting to create my own, I've found that digital literature isn't such a bad concept and may be here to stay. Although I will always prefer written text to that on a computer screen, digital literature is an exciting new tool and a great addition to the world of literature.

For the skeptics out there like me, you're about to become true believers in the merit of digital literature. Of course everyone will have expectations of digital literature that must be met if anyone is going to be convinced that it's worth their time. The best way to think of it is the progression of books being made into movies. When books are made into movies, so much more is added to the story that paper couldn't provide. Yes, when you read the book you can use your imagination and you have the characters and settings all built up in your mind. I'll also grant the fact that sometimes when books are made into movies, the movie version isn't as good as hoped or the characters look nothing like how you imagined them. However, the movie can add elements like music, sound effects, camera angles, spoken dialogue, lighting, and images that enhance the story and are not present in the book. Hayles says basically the same thing in her article. She says,

"Readers come to digital work with expectations formed by print […]. Of necessity, electronic literature must build on these expectations even as it modifies and transforms them. At the same time, because electronic literature is normally created and performed within a context of networked and programmable media, it is also informed by the powerhouses of contemporary culture, particularly computer games, films, animations, digital arts, graphic design, and electronic visual culture. In this sense electronic literature is a "hopeful monster" (as geneticists call adaptive mutations) composed of parts taken from diverse traditions that may not always fit neatly together. Hybrid by nature, it comprises a trading zone (as Peter Galison calls it in a different context) in which different vocabularies, expertises and expectations come together to see what might come from their intercourse. Electronic literature tests the boundaries of the literary and challenges us to re-think our assumptions of what literature can do and be." (What is it?, 2)


 

The last line is the most important point to keep in mind because it stresses the idea that electronic literature is forcing us to realize that we can take literature even further to a point where it provokes more thought than we've experienced up until now. She is not alone in this thought. Talan Memmott reinforces this idea in "Beyond Taxonomy: Digital Poetics and the Problem of Reading". He says that "the ability to cause thinking is an essential part of digital poetics and rhetoric, and it is here that literary hypermedia finds its greatest potential" (Taxonomy, 303). He not only says that it causes us to think more, he's also saying that that is where digital literature reaches its peak of importance. He doesn't stop there though. He says when people attempt to compare written text to its digital version, it "minimizes the material, performative, and computational actualities of digital poetry" because it has to be viewed as a whole and not for its individual parts (Taxonomy, 293). He explains this by using the analogy of a musician to his instrument. You have to learn how to play it and you have to actively participate with it in order to produce something substantial. You can't just touch the keys or a clarinet and you can't just blow through the opening; you have to do them simultaneously to get the full effect. He also makes a great comparison to the concept of mise-en-scène in theater where you don't just take into account the script you have to pay attention to everything else happening on stage like the costumes, lighting, and scenery. Electronic literature deserves and necessitates that same concept which is what makes it such a complex yet marvelous transformation of literature.
